Talk About SEO

Monday, October 31st, 2005

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of those crucial things when it comes to maintaining a successful website. I haven’t really done much of it with any of my sites, but it’s still interesting to see what search phrases lead people to The PhiLL(er) and apparently searching for fucking babysitters is a winning search phrase for the site with the Grand Buffet interview coming up third on Google for that particular phrase. Just in case you’re curious, it’s because Lord Grunge was talking about how Steven Seagal had some sort of deal with his babysitter.

A bit more relevant and impressive, however, are results when searching for Animal Collective Concert (#2!) and Donnie Darko Hoodie (#1!). Seems as though Marty’s writing just leads to excellent Google placement.

Learn By Ex(s)ample

This is nearly over a month old, but I just discovered this after going through some old e-mails. Music Thing has a link to a video of a Minnesota High School Band Performing songs from DJ Shadow’s Endtroducting live!

Kind of interesting to see/hear a live percussion group perform the music of someone that maintains a rule of only using samples and nothing live on his constructions.

I Want This

Monday, October 17th, 2005

So I’ve been using Google’s new RSS reader and found this amazing bookshelf. Unfortunately I think it was created solely for a design exhibtion, but I think it is brilliant. There’s a perfect spot for every book with this thing and the variety of angles and lengths just make it more interesting than a plain old bookshelf. If you happen to find the magical “buy me” link on that website, let me know. I want one!

Rolling the New Design

Monday, October 10th, 2005

I’ve finally begun to roll out the new design for thephiller.com. So far it’s only been updated on the podcast portion of the site, but it’ll pretty much be the same for the remaining portions as well. The only difference will be the background and link colors which will match the color in the header next to the link for that section of the site.

I think it is a lot cleaner and simpler than the old look and maybe a little fresher with the crisper colors. Things that can still use some work are better differentiation between the main content portion of the site from the header area of links and the logo in the left column. Comments/suggestions gladly accepted.

“Hacked” Again…

Sunday, October 9th, 2005

So I was about to do some programming on The PhiLL(er) when I noticed that once again the Features sidebar menu was missing and replaced by a message that I did not create. This time it was “the hacker owns”. I’m not sure why people find my site worth messing with and replacing files with their own content, but this is the second time in the past few months it has happened. I know that I am lucky that these folks haven’t just decided to delete all my files, but it’s still annoying even if it is easy to fix.

This of course just reinforces what I have already known in that my current content management setup is total crap and I need to re-work the way it is set up now that I know a tiny bit more than I did when I created it. Well and I guess I could manually edit permissions every time I change a file. I’ll try rolling bits and pieces in as I update the layout and just cross my fingers that this doesn’t happen again.
