Input! Need More Input!

Tuesday, December 20th, 2005

So Johnny Five consumed a lot of information and really loved the input, but what exactly did he ever do with that input? Yeah he would spout off a few facts here and there, but did he really ever share that input with his human friends in any useful way? I don’t think so.

What is all this input/data/Johnny Five talk about? It’s about Google. No, it’s not about their search function, it’s about their Year End Zeitgeist for 2005. It’s interesting to look at the various charts that they’ve put together comparing different social/cultural interest and to see how they stack up. Interested in other years and topics? Then check out Google’s Zeitgeist Home.

I Though This Was a Good Deal

Wednesday, December 14th, 2005

So while checking out The Big Noob, I was informed of this great deal where if you buy someone an iTunes gift certificate through Paypal, you get free songs. I got really excited and started planning on buying myself some iTunes credits to get free songs when I remembered that despite its obvious conveniences, I hate iTunes and the whole idea of buying music online.

Why?

Well lack of liner notes is a pretty obvious one, but more importantly, when you buy music online you most likely don’t get all the freedoms to do with that song what you should according to fair use. Limited number of burns, limited number of computers you can play it on, limited number of devices (and only to an iPod in the case of iTunes) , and poorer quality are just a handful of reasons why buying music online simply sucks. I still have $5.99 in iTunes credit though (won it through something like buying a Slurpee) so we’ll see what guilty pleasures get purchased in the future.

This Sounds Like…

So on the way back from running some errands today, this new Nine Inch Nails song came on the radio. The thing is that I didn’t know it was Nine Inch Nails in the beginning and in the process of trying to figure out what it was thought that it kind of sounded like Dave Matthews singing. Of course, the music really didn’t match what “The Dave” would play since he’s all about his acoustic guitar and for him to go electric would be total Dave-dom blasphemy. This led me to conclude that the song sounded a bit like Dave Matthews going incredibly 80s on us and then to state that it sounded like Dave Matthews totally getting his Peter Gabriel on.

There, I just had to share this story. Attention Trent Reznor: the beginning of some new song of yours totally sounds like Dave Matthews getting his Peter Gabriel on!

Does anyone know what song I’m talking about and have you had the same realization? I’m just talking about the beginning before he really starts singing; once the chorus kicked (and also after Yaeka told me) I realized who it really was.

Destroy The Gap

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

Just found this awesome video of destroying the Gap directed by Spike Jonze on Between Thought and Expression. I think my favorite part may very well be the lumberjack using his chainsaw to tear down some pillars. Now if he had an axe instead of a chainsaw it may have been perfect.
